Birthing Possibilities

As this month comes to a close, it’s easy to feel the weight of what hasn’t happened yet- prayers still waiting for answers, goals still halfway done, dreams still unfolding. The rush to “make it happen” can quietly creep in, pushing us into hurry instead of harmony with God’s timing. But the Spirit gently reminds us: “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) Hope and hurry cannot dwell in the same heart. Hurry is rooted in fear; fear that time is running out, that we’ve missed our moment, that God has forgotten. But hope rests in faith-faith that God is still writing, still weaving, still working even when we can’t see the full picture. When we choose hope, we choose to anchor our hearts in God’s promises rather than our own pace. We learn to move at the rhythm of grace, not striving, not proving, but trusting. A vaccine innoculates against a virus by giving our bodies weak, watered-down version of the virus. Then when our bodies get the real sickness, it is familiar with the virus and easily shrugs it off. Empty religious rituals can do the same thing to believers. When they become a mindless habit, they can innoculate us to God's living love and truth. When ritual is separated from faith, it becomes a kind of inoculation. Like a vaccine, it exposes us to a weakened form of the truth; just enough to make us resistant to its living power. We become accustomed to hearing sacred words, yet they no longer pierce. We recite prayers, yet feel no pulse of presence. The danger is not in the ritual itself, but in the slow dulling of the heart that performs it without awe. Faith was always meant to be the flame that animates our practice. Yesterday, the news of the passing of God's general, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai flooded social media. The Christian community continues to reflect on the life and times of this great evangelist. We cannot but acknowledge the impact this man has made in the Nigerian Christian community and beyond.
