THE SCENT OF WATER
"For there is hope for a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease. Though its root grow old in the earth, and its stump die in the soil, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put out branches like a young plant."- Job 14:7–9 (ESV)
A stump may seem unappealing at first glance. People walk past stumps. They sit on stumps. Sometimes they use stumps for target practice. To many, a stump represents failure-a point where growth has seemingly come to an end.
But below the stump, below the visible, there is a root system that existed long before the tree was cut down. Roots that grew in secret during all those years of growth. Roots that pressed through rock and endured both rainy and dry seasons.
Your root system is what God has been building in you through every season. The prayers that felt unanswered. The character formed in secret. The trust developed not in the mountain moments but in the valley ones. None of it was wasted. All of it was root-work.
And the truth is that roots can survive what branches cannot.
If you are reading this today, you may be feeling cut down by illness, loss, personal failures, or the unkindness of others. You may be carrying the weight of years that did not go as you planned. You may be asking yourself if anything good can come out of your current state.
Remember that Job's words were not the words of a man in comfort. They are the words of a man in ash, and they are still words of hope. The kind that costs something to say and means everything because of it.
The Living Water is not far from you. Jesus, who himself was cut down, who knew the darkness of a sealed tomb, is the very scent your roots are designed to respond to. He is the water. He has always been the water. And when you encounter him, even faintly, even through tears, the ancient instruction written into your bones takes over:
"But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:14
When you bud again, you become evidence. You become the living argument against doubt for someone who is still in their stump season, who hasn't yet believed that something could grow back. You become the tree they walk past and think, wait. Wasn't that tree cut down? How is it...?
That's the question your journey will inspire. And the answer you will give is: "Water came."
Know this: You are not defined by what has been cut away. You are defined by what remains, and what remains is rooted in something water can reach.
