AS I WAS BUSY HERE AND THERE

1 Kings 20:39–40  “As your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”

A prophet, disguised as a wounded soldier, tells King Ahab a story: he was given a man to guard, with clear instructions-keep him safe. The condition was simple: if the man escaped, the guard would pay the price. But then came the confession that changed everything: “As your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”

This man was not rebellious, did not refuse the assignment, did not sleep on duty; he was just distracted.
And distraction cost him everything.

Focus Is a Spiritual Responsibility
This story shows that what we lose is not always taken by force; it often slips away while we are busy with something else.
The man was not lost because the guard slept. He was lost because the guard shifted his attention.

How many assignments, callings, seasons, and instructions have quietly slipped away, not because we didn’t care, but because we were “busy here and there”?

Busyness Is Not the Same as Faithfulness
The tragedy of this story is that the servant was active. He was doing something. Yet he failed at the one thing he was told to do.

Busyness can be deceptive. It gives the illusion of progress while slowly pulling us away from purpose. You can be busy with good things and still lose the God-given thing entrusted to you.

Focus asks a hard question:
What has God placed in my care that requires my full attention in this season?

What You Guard Determines What You Keep
The guard’s responsibility was not to multitask; it was to watch. Focus is about guarding what matters most-your faith, your family, your calling, your peace, your obedience.

Distraction doesn’t always come as sin. Sometimes it comes as noise, urgency, comparison, or endless demands pulling you “here and there.”

The danger is not movement; it is misdirected movement.

A Call to Intentional Living
This story ends with King Ahab realizing the message was meant for him. The mirror was held up, and the lesson was clear: what you fail to guard, you may lose, and the cost can be high.

Focus is choosing, daily, to stay present with what God has assigned you.
It is saying no to “here and there” so you can remain faithful right here.

  • What has God entrusted to you in this season?
  • Where has distraction crept in unnoticed?
  • What needs renewed focus before it quietly slips away?

The power of focus is not in doing more; it is in staying where God placed you, until the assignment is complete.
