STEWARDING YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

No one journeys through life alone. From family to friendships, mentors to peers, relationships are the threads that weave through our stories. The truth is that the people around you can either push you toward purpose or pull you away from it. That’s why stewarding your relationships is a critical part of stewarding your journey well.

Relationships Are a Gift and a Responsibility
God often answers prayers through people. He brings helpers, encouragers, and destiny partners into our paths. But He also asks us to treat those relationships with wisdom, honor, and care. Stewardship here means recognizing the value of the people in your life and handling those connections with intentionality.
Proverbs 13:20 says:
“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
Who you walk with affects who you become.

Destiny Helpers vs. Distractions
Not everyone in your circle is meant to stay. Some people are assignments; others are distractions. Some will encourage your growth; others will drain your energy. Stewardship means learning to discern the difference.
  • Destiny helpers sharpen you, challenge you, and push you closer to God’s call.

  • Distractions pull you off course, stir unnecessary drama, or keep you stuck in old cycles.

Amos 3:3 asks:
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”

Agreement does not mean no arguments or quarrels, but it means alignment. Who you walk with must align with where God is taking you.

Building Healthy Relationships
It’s not enough to attract good people; you must also nurture those relationships. Healthy connections don’t thrive on autopilot; they require effort. Stewardship in relationships looks like:
  • Mutual investment: Give as much as you receive.
  • Boundaries: Know when to say yes and when to say no.
  • Forgiveness: People will fail you; release offenses quickly.
  • Encouragement: Speak life and celebrate others genuinely.

Remember, even Jesus had layers of relationships. He loved the multitudes, taught the 72, discipled the 12, but confided in the 3. Not everyone gets the same level of access, and that’s okay.

Practical Ways to Steward Relationships
  1. Evaluate your circle: Who pushes you closer to God’s purpose? Who constantly drains you?
  2. Set relational goals: Maybe it’s reconnecting with a mentor, spending intentional time with family, or building new friendships that align with your season.
  3. Pray over your relationships: Ask God for discernment and wisdom in handling people well.
  4. Be the friend you desire: Sow loyalty, encouragement, and honesty into others.
A Question for You
Who’s walking with you right now? Do they fuel your faith or weaken it? And more importantly, how are you showing up in the lives of others?

Takeaway: Relationships can either fuel or frustrate your journey. Steward them wisely, and you’ll find strength, encouragement, and alignment for the road ahead.
