STEWARDING YOUR GIFTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

I once heard someone say, “Opportunities are like doors-some swing open once, others swing open often, but all require you to walk through.” That picture stuck with me because it reminded me that what we do with opportunities matters as much as the opportunities themselves.

Think about the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14–30. The master gave each servant a portion: five, two, and one talent. Two of them invested wisely, doubled what they were given, and received a reward. The last buried his, too afraid to act. The message is clear: God expects us to do something with what He places in our hands.

Gifts and Opportunities Are Seeds
Your gifts-whether it’s leadership, creativity, problem-solving, encouragement, or teaching- are not just for you. They’re seeds meant to bless others and advance God’s kingdom. In the same way, opportunities, big or small, are doors that allow those gifts to grow and shine.
The question is: What are you doing with the seeds God has given you?
  • Are you hiding them out of fear of failure?
  • Are you waiting until you feel “fully ready”?
  • Or are you planting and watering them faithfully, even if no one notices yet?
A Story of Two Friends
A few years ago, two friends both had the same chance to lead a small project at work. One saw it as insignificant and declined, saying, “I’ll wait for something bigger.” The other accepted, gave her best, and treated the small assignment with excellence. Months later, when a larger leadership role opened, guess who was chosen? The one who had been faithful with the small.

Opportunities are often disguised as “little things.” How you handle them is a reflection of your stewardship.

The Pitfalls to Avoid
1. Pride: Thinking opportunities are about your fame instead of God’s glory.
2. Fear: Burying your gifts because you’re afraid of making mistakes.
3. Procrastination: Delaying action until “someday” that never comes.

How to Steward Gifts and Opportunities Well
  • Recognize the Source: Every gift and opportunity comes from God (James 1:17). Stay humble.
  • Prepare Beforehand: Opportunities often find the prepared. Sharpen your skills in the quiet season.
  • Say Yes Wisely: Not every door is for you, but when it’s yours, step through boldly.
  • Give Your Best: Even in “small” assignments, do it with excellence as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23).
  • Stay Teachable: Let each opportunity stretch you, refine you, and grow you.

After watching the movie "Waiting Wars" by Gloria Bamiloye, you find tthat there is the faith that makes noise and there is the faith that remains when the noise fades.
