DEALING WITH HURT AND BITTERNESS-A PATH TO FREEDOM

“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” – Hebrews 12:15 (NIV)

Hurt is inevitable. Bitterness is a choice.
In life, we will all be wounded by words, actions, betrayals, disappointments, or unmet expectations. Some wounds are light scratches. Others cut so deep, they alter how we see people, ourselves, and even God.
If we're not careful, those wounds grow roots; roots of bitterness.
Bitterness begins quietly. It starts as pain that is not properly processed, turns into anger that simmers, then hardens into resentment. Left unchecked, bitterness will poison our peace, cloud our joy, and stunt our spiritual growth.

But here’s the good news: God never intended for you to carry that burden.

1. Acknowledge the Pain
Don’t pretend you’re not hurt. Don’t bury it under busyness or “I’m fine.” Healing begins when you’re honest with yourself and with God. David poured out his pain in the Psalms, and so can you.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” – Psalm 147:3

2. Bring it to the Cross
Take your pain to the feet of Jesus. He understands betrayal. He knows rejection. He’s acquainted with grief. When you release your hurt into His hands, you make room for His healing.
Bitterness says, “I must make them pay.”
Forgiveness says, “Jesus already did.”

3. Choose Forgiveness- Daily
Forgiveness isn’t a one-time event; it’s a daily decision. Some offenses take time to fully release, especially when the hurt runs deep. But each time you forgive, you tear down the walls bitterness tries to build.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32

4. Guard Your Heart
Be mindful of conversations, thoughts, and memories that reopen old wounds. Don’t keep rehearsing the offense. Replace bitter thoughts with God’s truth. Surround yourself with life-giving words and people who build your spirit.

5. Let God Rewrite Your Story
The enemy wants your pain to define you. But God wants to use it to refine you. That pain you’re carrying can become your testimony. That betrayal can birth a new level of grace. That brokenness can lead to a breakthrough.
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…” – Genesis 50:20

Bitterness is a prison with invisible bars, but Jesus holds the key. Let Him unlock the places you’ve sealed. Let Him clean out what resentment has tried to rot. Let Him restore joy where sorrow had settled.

You don’t have to stay hurt. You don’t have to stay bitter. You can be free.
