WEIGHTS AND YOUR GOALS

Drop the weights.

Have you ever tried running with a very heavy back pack, how did you fare? Imagine trying to catch the last bus for the day and having a heavy bag pulling behind you. Certainly, others without any baggage will surely outrun you and catch the bus.

What are "weights" and how do they affect your ability to achieving your goals? In this context, weights refer to emotional baggage, past hurts, past failures, negative beliefs, and how they can weigh us down and hinder our progress.

These emotional weights can also manifest as self-doubt, difficulty trusting others, insecurities, and unresolved issues. All of these create obstacles on the path to reaching your goals. If you want to achieve your set goals this year and beyond, it will be beneficial to lighten your load.

Interestingly, some of these weights are within your control, while others are not. How you respond to these two divides is very important to finishing strong. If you can't change a situation, change your perception of it-that is where your power lies. Either be controlled or be in control.

Setting aside these weights could be the key to turning around the near success syndrome you might be experiencing when it comes to achieving your goals.

Here are some ways weights (as defined above) can impact your ability to acheive your goals.

1. Mental Blockages: Unresolved emotional issues can create mental blocks that make it hard to commit and focus on your goals.

2. Self-doubt: Second-guessing your abilities, even when you are fully capable of achieving your goals, leads to hesitation and inaction.

3. Procrastination: Delay in taking action, hinders progress.

4. Emotional Drain: This will leave you feeling exhausted or overwhelmed, which in turn will affect your energy levels, reducing your capacity to focus on and complete tasks.

5. Unhealthy coping mechanism: like overeating, substance use, or withdrawal which will further derail progress towards your goal.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. (Hebrews 12:1)

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. (Philipians 3:12-13)
