EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND YOUR GOALS
Hello There!
A prospective employer once asked me if I was familiar with
emotional intelligence. At the time, I was unsure of what it entailed and took
a guess in my response. The term was a new buzzword in the corporate world, but
my job-hunting self wasn't particularly concerned about its meaning or
relevance. After the interview, however, I felt compelled to research the
concept that had left me searching for an answer.
Emotional intelligence, often abbreviated as EI or EQ (emotional quotient), refers to the ability to understand, use, and manage your emotions positively. This skill helps relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, navigate challenges, and diffuse conflict. Emotional intelligence is essential in both personal and professional settings, as it fosters stronger relationships and supports success in achieving personal and career goals. High emotional intelligence is often linked to better mental health, job performance, and leadership abilities.
You might be wondering what has that got to do with me setting, pursuing, and achieving my goals?
Emotional intelligence (EI) can be a powerful tool in achieving your goals in several ways:
1. Self-awareness: By understanding your emotions and how they influence your behavior, you can make more informed decisions and set realistic, achievable goals.
2. Self-regulation: Managing your emotions helps you stay focused and calm under pressure, which is crucial when pursuing long-term goals. It also aids in maintaining motivation and avoiding burnout.
3. Motivation: People with high EI tend to be more intrinsically motivated, which means they pursue goals for personal fulfillment rather than external rewards. This intrinsic motivation can lead to greater perseverance and resilience.
4. Empathy: Understanding the emotions of others helps you build strong relationships and networks, which can be invaluable in achieving professional and personal goals. It also allows you to work more effectively in teams and understand the needs and motivations of those around you.
5. Social Skills: Strong social skills facilitate better communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. These are essential for resolving goals that require collaboration, feedback, or support from others.
By integrating these aspects of emotional intelligence into your daily life, you can enhance your ability to set and achieve meaningful goals, maintain positive relationships, and navigate challenges more effectively.
When I was getting a degree, emotional intelligence had to come into play. I had to navigate between family, work, and school, ensuring that none suffered badly on account of the other.
You can achieve your goals more efficiently when you know how to get people to work with you, rather than viewing you as a competition.
In essence, emotional intelligence enables individuals to set goals that are not only attainable but also aligned with their emotional needs and the well-being of those around them, while also equipping them to stay motivated and resilient throughout the process.
Yeah, it's a new week-go birth possibilities!!!
